Meet Dr. Mehmet Danis, Your Dentist in Oshawa
Before becoming a dentist, Dr. Danis earned his bachelor and master’s degrees in Science from the University of Toronto and was an internationally published author in the fields of Biochemistry and Physiology. In fact, he won the National Research Scholarship of Canada for three consecutive years.
After several years in the field of scientific research, he went on to become a dentist (graduating from the University of Western Ontario) and began serving as a dental officer in the Canadian Armed Forces. During his time as an army officer, he served as a World Health Organization (WHO) examiner for the Canadian public and received his commissioning scroll from the Queen of England.
“My time as an army dentist changed the way I handle urgent, emergency-type situations,” says Dr. Danis, “Unlike a lot of dentists, I thoroughly enjoy being able to work emergency patients into my schedule on the same day. The planning and organization that goes into helping them out of pain while ensuring a positive experience are extremely rewarding for me. I know I’m making an impact on the quality of life of someone else.”
Dr. Danis is also a regular speaker within the dental circuit, including events with the Toronto Dental Academy, Edmonton Teachers Annual Convention, Canadian forces Annual Winter Meeting in our Nation’s Capital, and the CF Halifax Sports Convention.
Advanced Training
You might call him a “lifelong learner.” In addition to his dental degree, Dr. Danis has gone on to advance his surgical skills and knowledge by completing Oral Maxillofacial Surgery training with the National Defence Dental School, advanced pain management education through the prestigious Walter Reed Military Hospital, and advanced sedation dentistry training through the University of Toronto.
“Being able to provide safe, in-house dental sedation — whether it’s oral sedation or IV sedation — means that I can assist even the most anxious of patients,” he says, “If someone has complex dental needs, providing them with a sedation option ensures the most relaxing process possible so that they can regain control of their oral health.”
Outside of Work
Dr. Danis is a proud father who devotes time to family. But when he isn’t busy seeing patients or spending time with his loved ones, you’ll catch him at long-distance endurance runs. As an international ultramarathon runner, he has competed in and won several medals and championships around the world, including the CF Ottawa marathon, the Atacama Desert Race, Memorial Bataan Death March, and podium finishes in the Sahara Desert race, Gobi Desert Ultramarathon, and the Great Canadian Death Race.
